I’ve never been one for new year’s resolutions because quite frankly, they have never stuck past the end of January. Who can relate with this? (All hands go up). Setting intensions is no good either because there is no action involved. I can intend to do good things and make changes, but if there’s no execution, then my good intensions are basically thrown out the window and forgotten about.
Instead, I’m more of a believer in setting goals and action planning in more manageable doses. The trick is to make it fun and easy for yourself so you actually look forward to doing this refresh each year.
I’m not going to talk about SMART goals, because I’m pretty sure we all know what those are. What I’ll do instead, is kick start 2018 by sharing a mantra that I’ve choose for the year and a bit of inspiration that might just help you set your own mantra too. My mantra is what I craft and carry with me throughout the year and reflect on often. I get well acquainted with it and it becomes my little side-kick. It also guides me in my goal setting activities which helps push me beyond my comfort zone. Here’s my 2018 mantra:
“Growth only occurs in a state of discomfort”. Think about it…. it’s totally true. Nobody likes discomfort but we’ve all experienced it. It doesn’t feel nice. Sometimes, it’s actually painful. It makes us want to crawl back to our routines (a familiar place) where we know we’ll be safe and sound.
When it comes to responding to discomfort, we each have a choice. Do you flee? Or do you tackle it head on and power through knowing that somewhere past the discomfort tunnel is light and personal growth waiting to happen? Maybe I always knew discomfort was a good guy in disguise, but it wasn’t until a friend shared this Tedx Talk with me that the concept started to resonate with me further until I decided to make it my mantra for the new year.
These are the words I’m choosing to live by in 2018. What’s your 2018 mantra?
Whatever your hopes, dreams and wishes are for 2018 – get uncomfortable with me and let’s work to crush those #goals together! Looking forward to making 2018 a fab one!
