Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge! With just 2 more weeks to go, I’m feeling excited for the finish line and I can hardly wait to curl up and relax in our new bedroom space. Until then, gotta stay focused on that to-do list! The next few days is when really when we’ll start to see some crucial changes happen to the our master bedroom (ie. new paint is going on the walls using Para Paints).
Over the last week, I’ve been patiently waiting for the orders to start rolling in. While playing the waiting game, I popped in to see the progress of our armchair. If you remember me mentioning in week 2, I found a great ol’ armchair that we’re getting reupholstered for our bedroom. Here’s what it’s looking like in it’s current state – paired back to the bones. It’s got some lovely detail – I love the way the chair hugs you when you sit in it – and with the new fabric I chose, it’s going to look dyno-mite!
One of the first items to arrive from my recent ordering binge for this room was the lighting fixture. If you recall from week 2, there was a bit of a debate happening as to whether or not we were going to keep a fan in the bedroom or switch it out with a nice light fixture. Here’s how that debate went… I actually DID find a fan I liked, showed Marc and he liked it as well (bonus, right?). The fan was still not sitting right with me though. After some further contemplation, I realized that we really only use the fan in the heat of the summer months which is really only like 2 months out of 12 a year. Seems a bit of a waste if we don’t actually use the fan year-round. So, I took another shot at sourcing a lighting fixture that was not a fan… and not a drum shade… and instead, searched for something with a little….. gold! Here’s a sneak at where we landed with the lighting fixture and I’m totally loving the new direction. What do you think?
I HAVE THIS THING WITH PILLOWS
What we are still waiting for is our area rug from RugsUSA, headboard from Wayfair and a handmade accent pillow I ordered from Etsy from a Canadian shop called DeeMacAndCo. Confession – I’m kind of obsessed with pillows. Correction – I’m not entirely sure if it’s actually the pillows I’m obsessed with if it’s more of a fabric obsession. Hell, it might just be both (and I’m totally okay with that)! Etsy is one place I spend considerable amount of time at. I love that this online marketplace has been created so that a large community of makers can share their talents and their goods with the world. It’s also pretty amazing to see all the talent in our own local area as well. I love supporting local whenver possible.
If you follow me on Etsy, you’l know I’ve created quite the list of favorite items and shops I follow. One glorious day when I was casually browsing for home decor goods, I came across this pillow and knew I had to have it in my life. Took me a while to figure out where it would sit in our home exactly, but I think I’ve got that all figured out now! I love that this pillow has a little modern bohemian edge with a fun print, is handmade locally and has tassels. Let’s face it, tassels are ALWAYS a good idea!! The grey and orange details will compliment the bedding in all the right ways too.
And for the bedding selections, here is a sneak peak at some of the prints and textiles you’ll be seeing on our bed. It’s a mix of old and new. I’m keeping our duvet cover and bed skirt from Gluckstein Home at Hudson’s Bay that we received from our wedding shower registry. It’s a nice grey with some subtle stripes that make it the perfect layering piece. I sourced a new sheet set from Costco (Yes, Costco for $25!) in a really funky, yet tiny print that has a bit of a global feel. Then, I’ll be using linen shams for further layering on the bed to provide a different texture (also from Hudson’s Bay).
One more thing that was able to tackle this week was choosing drapery. I wanted to choose something light and airy and neutral as I’d be injecting colour in other ways into this room.
If you’ve ever shopped for window treatments, you’ll know that it’s no easy task. There are tons of options out there to choose from but in my mind, it’s all about finding something you love, for a reasonable price AND well-made with good quality material. The material used is the key to having your drapery hang beautifully, provide great texture to your space and made to function well (ie. provide privacy, diffuse light, block light, etc).
Your options for shopping for drapery is: 1) finding panels at a big-boxed store, 2) making your own if you are crafty or 3 ) getting custom drapery. I find that #1 is a challenge and you really have to go on a hunt for something that checks all the boxes, #2 is great if you are not in a time crunch and can take your time working on this as a project. And #3, custom drapery can be expensive, but well worth the investment is you can fit it into your budget. For our ORC bedroom project, I am going with option #1 for convenience and it will be a bit softer on the budget.
As bedrooms are a space were you rest and re-charge the batteries, it’s important to go for something that has a blackout feature so that you block light coming into the room so that you can get a good night’s sleep. And when we get a great sleep, we are all wake up a little happier, am I right? 🙂
Our bedroom window already has a simple white roller blind on it but I’m going to add drapery to give it another layer and some dimension. For a great neutral curtain that is has nice quality material for the cost, I looked to West Elm and got their Linen Cotton Curtains in white.
Those are your week’s sneak peaks. The next week leading up to our photoshoot will be all about painting. Join me on Instagram stories as I get my painting pants on to get down any dirty. I’ll be chatting about choosing paint colours, a little bit more about our sponsorship partnership with Para Paints and sharing some helpful painting tips with you.
Big thanks again to Linda from Calling It Home for hosting this round’s One Room Challenge and don’t forget to catch up on the other 20 featured designers and other fellow participants are up to this week. Thank you to everyone for following along!
Have a great week! xo,
